CAR + CLASSICSCHARACTER COMES STANDARD

THE OWNERSHIP FILE

The first drive is a shakedown, not a grand tour

Make the first outing short enough that you can pay attention to the car and change the plan easily.

Get the starting condition established

How long was the vehicle stored, where was it kept and what was done before it was parked? Those questions set the scope of the return-to-use inspection. Ask a qualified workshop to assess safety-critical systems and follow the manufacturer’s guidance for the exact car. Do not assume a quick start proves that tyres, brakes or fuel systems are ready for road use.

Do the planning while it is still parked

Confirm insurance, any required inspection and the arrangements for lawful road use in your location. Check that you have the correct keys and contact details for assistance. Choose daylight, sensible weather and a route with safe places to stop. Avoid making the first drive a motorway trip, a passenger outing or a deadline-driven collection. A quiet local loop gives you more options.

Pack for the day you are taking

Keep luggage limited, secure it properly and make sure it does not obstruct the controls or view. Take a charged phone and the details for roadside assistance. Any emergency equipment should suit local requirements and the vehicle. Leave loose tools out of the passenger space. A boot organiser is useful only if it fits securely and still lets you reach the items you need.

Listen without diagnosing on the move

If anything feels wrong, use a safe stopping place rather than trying to investigate in traffic. New warning lights, unusual smells or a change in braking need proper attention. Do not keep driving to complete a planned distance or reach a scenic photograph. Describe the symptom, the conditions and when it appeared to the workshop. That is more useful than naming a part on the basis of a noise.

Keep a note after the drive

Once parked safely, record the distance, conditions and anything that changed. Follow handbook instructions for any checks; hot components and pressurised systems need particular care. Book follow-up work before the longer trip if concerns appeared. If the outing was uneventful, you have a useful first data point, not a guarantee. Build up the use gradually and keep the observation record with the car’s paperwork.
